Forbes edging closer to magic Olympic mark

Ronald Forbes is edging closer to that coveted Olympic mark.

The Florida International University senior was named Sun Belt Conference Track Performer of the week for his 13.96 seconds 110 metre hurdle win at the University of Miami, and at the Florida Relays last Friday. He celebrated his 26th birthday a day early, with a 13.67secs wind-aided effort (4.8mph), which actually bettered the Olympic B standard qualifying mark of 13.72 seconds.

His 13.96secs had placed him eleventh in NCAA Division I rankings going into this past weekend’s competitions.

Hopefully, it will only be a matter of time before conditions and performance will jibe and he will be able to dip under the required standard within the legal wind allowance.

Additionally, his 21.78secs mark for 200m in Miami was the second-best time in the conference for that event.

Tentatively, he is scheduled to be at the U of M track again this coming weekend.

Over at Auburn University, Carl and Carlos Morgan of Middle Tennessee State University literally could not have come much closer to the NCAA Division I Regional Qualifying Mark for the long jump.

Although Carl was second at 7.33 metres and Carlos took third with 7.29 metres, the elusive 7.34 metre distance eluded them on this occasion.

Carl, in particular, was a single centimetre shy of the standard. They will likely continue the quest at the Sea Ray Relays in Tennessee next weekend.

At the Texas Relays, Omar Wright of Rice University cleared 2.05 metres for the second week in a row, as he finished seventh in the University A section of the men’s high jump.

The formidable group of Cayman collegiate track stars who compete for King College were granted a weekend’s rest, but could be at Appalachian State and Clemson in upcoming action.
