Butterfield Bank has donated $20,000 to the Cayman Heart Fund and it is already being put to effective use with the purchase of a much-needed Heart Stress Treadmill Machine for the Health Services Authority in George Town.
The Cayman Heart Fund is a non-profit, non-government organisation dedicated to the reduction of cardiovascular disease in the Cayman Islands, by implementing educational and awareness programmes in schools, workplaces and communities.
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the term used for heart, stroke and circulatory diseases, which is the number one health problem globally.
CVD accounts for one third of all deaths worldwide – far exceeding deaths caused by cancer or any other disease or, even road accidents. Many people do not realise that CVD kills more than four times as many women as breast cancer does.
But the good news is that this terrible disease is largely preventable. Early signs of CVD can often be detected by simple monitoring for high blood pressure and cholesterol. And everyone can reduce their risks of CVD by doing regular, moderate physical activity, by eating healthier foods and by stopping smoking.
And that is where the Cayman Heart Fund comes in – not only will the Fund implement educational programmes throughout the Islands but it will also implement screening facilities and work towards improving cardiac care facilities and equipment in our Hospitals.
Butterfield Bank’s Monique Bush said: ‘At Butterfield Bank supporting health and fitness initiatives in the Cayman Islands is very important to us, and our partnership with the Cayman Heart Fund is one that I know will directly improve the lives of the people of our community.’
On Saturday, 17th May at the Family Life Centre on Walker’s Road, the Cayman Heart Fund will have its first Heart Fair with the HSA and Chrissie Tomlinson Hospitals in attendance, as well as some overseas hospitals from the USA. Local insurance companies; fitness, exercise and diet instructors will also be in attendance so everyone is invited to come along and learn more about improving your health and reducing your risks of this disease.
