Bollettieri was here for the Outback Legends tournament at the Ritz-Carlton and was impressed by the enthusiasm for the tennis here.
The veteran coach, 77, has produced hundreds of top players from his academy in Bradenton, Florida, including world beaters Andre Agassi, Jim Courier and Monica Seles.
‘I was at the Cayman tennis club on Friday night and there must have been 250 people packed in there,’ he said. ‘The children are really into it and it’s really beginning to catch on now.
‘The Ritz-Carlton is really concerned about making opportunities like this which will give enthusiasm for people to see. Hopefully, they’ll start playing a lot more. But we have to back up at the Cayman Islands Tennis Club. They need dollars to keep helping the children.’
Bollettieri is a welcome face in tennis circles here. He added: ‘This trip is five days for me, which is a long one for me. I’ll probably be back in the fall again. I make four or five trips a year to the Ritz to meet Michael Ryan (the developer) and I’m very happy when I come down.’
