A man who was struck by a hit-and-run driver in West Bay earlier this month has died from his injuries. He was 55-year-old Lewey Earlon Ebanks, of Reverend Blackman Road, West Bay.
Mr. Ebanks was pronounced dead Thursday at a Jamaican hospital. He was flown there after being knocked down along Reverend Blackman Road on 10 April, suffering major head injuries.
The hit-and-run driver has not been found and police are appealing for people with information to come forward.
‘We still do not know what happened,’ said Senior Investigating Officer, Chief Inspector Courtney Myles. ‘Witnesses have told us they saw a dark coloured car, likely to be a Honda Civic, leaving the scene but we do not know how the incident took place.’
On Friday, Mr. Myles appealed directly to the driver to contact police. ‘If you were the driver of that car, please come forward,’ he said.
‘There is no doubt that there must be a lot of pressure and stress on you. If you come forward, we can resolve this matter. If you cannot speak to us directly at this time, please find someone you are comfortable with, such as a pastor, to help you come forward.’
The death is the fifth on Cayman’s roads this year. It is also the second fatal hit-and-run accident to occur in West Bay within five months.
Anyone who can assist with the investigation is urged to contact Chief Inspector Myles on 926-0649 or 946-6254. Anyone who wants to pass information completely anonymously is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 800-8477 (TIPS). All persons calling crime stoppers remain anonymous, and are eligible for a reward of up to $1000, should their information lead to an arrest or recovery of property/drugs.
