Devon Anglin chooses judge alone
Devon Anglin, charged with murder
in the death of four-year-old Jeremiah Barnes, will stand trial 14 March. The
date was confirmed in Grand Court on Friday.
Anglin chose to be tried by judge
alone. His attorney, Clyde Allen, said the trial was expected to take four
weeks.
Jeremiah was in the back seat of a
vehicle at Hell Esso Station in West Bay with his parents and older brother on
the evening of 15 February when he was struck in the head by a bullet.
In October, Mr. Allen told the
court he was trying to get an expert witness to review the report of the
Crown’s expert witness. Legal aid funding was approved to a certain amount, but
one expert based in the US told him he couldn’t think of any reputable expert
who would accept that rate.
The defence attorney said his lead
counsel for the case is Alastair Malcolm QC from the UK. Mr. Malcolm had said
he would contact someone there.
On Friday, Mr. Allen advised that
an expert witness had been procured. On that basis, and with the agreement of
Senior Crown Counsel Trevor Ward, the trial date was confirmed.
Anglin’s remand in custody was
continued.
