Brackers want better air service

Cayman Brac residents want better air service and they want to talk to the folks in charge of Cayman Airways.

Sister Islands MLA Moses Kirkconnell hosted a community meeting at Spot Bay Cove 6 March.

There he heard air service complaints and the desire for more business opportunities to the Spot Bay area, states a press release.

Mr. Kirkconnell reported that the new VP Commercial at Cayman Airways John Wrightington and Cayman Airways Express Manager Thom Guyton met with members of the Sister Islands Tourism Association.

He also told the crowd that CAL executive managers and board members will have a retreat on Cayman Brac 20 to 22 April and offered to request a time when they could meet with members of the public.

This was the fourth town hall meeting with residents of the Sister Islands since the elections in May 2005 and Mr. Kirkconnell said he intends to continue to meet with his constituents on a regular quarterly basis to get input and advice on what needs to be done.

He told the crowd that whenever he is in his Stake Bay office, residents are always welcome to come and voice their concerns, and when he’s not there, his Personal Assistant Ms Liz Walton will listen and pass on their views.

‘It’s my basic responsibility as your political representative to come to the people that are unable to come to me, so everyone gets the opportunity to have a say in what’s happening and so that I can tell people about developments on these Islands,’ he said.

The Sister Islands Beautification Committee was commended for its efforts around the Brac. However, Spot Bay residents thought that more needed to be done in that district, especially the park.

Discussions focused on the need for residents of Spot Bay and Government to work together toward this end and also how to attract more tourists and business to this district.

The need for proper signage so that tourists can find their way to Spot Bay’s cultural and heritage sites was pointed out as a mater of urgency.

Other positives achievements since the elections are the recent opening of the Cayman Brac Day Care Centre, the imminent opening of the medical wing of the Aston Rutty Civic Centre and progress on the phased sports complex on the Bluff, the MLA noted.

Eleven new positions at Public Works Department on the Brac are being advertised. In addition, plans for the extension to the District Administration Building were on track, and this will bring even more public service jobs on line when it is complete.

One well-received update was that the road programme for the Brac includes ramps to the Bluff at Charlotte’s Road and Ann Tatum Road and these developments are on track.

Andre and Lynnette Scott, Liz Walton, as well as Nicole and Larrington Brown and their three children, are among the list of Brackers who moved to Grand Cayman to find jobs but have now come back home. This is a good sign for the district, noted Mr. Kirkconnell.
