In reference to the 7 March editorial about smoking, it seems to me that the Cayman Islands would do better by addressing the alcohol problem on Grand Cayman and the sister islands.
Perhaps they should close down all of the bars and liquor stores in the islands.
After all it seems as if the roads in Cayman are very unsafe due to drinking and driving.
The youngsters on the island have a few beers and think they are king of the road.
How many young lives have been lost in the past year?
It looks to me like the local folk spend hours and hours drinking in the bars. They should after all be home with their families.
This is a real problem in Cayman.
Where are the men on this island in the after work hours? During work hours? Many certainly are not at home and are a problem the islands are already trying to address; good old family values.
If the Cayman Island government is so interested in protecting peoples’ health then they need to address the other addiction problem facing your island.
My question is whether or not they have the guts to restrict alcohol as you would cigarettes.
Both are public health issues.
I think you will find that many people who do not drink are affected daily by the actions of those who do drink. Drinking presents a bad example for the children. Innocent people are killed worldwide by people who have been drinking.
Drinking destroys lives and families. If the government wants to decide what is best health-wise for all the people of the Cayman Islands then they need to look across all avenues. Remember, though, that your island depends on tourism to survive.
Do you have the guts to limit alcohol sales and consumption as you will limit tobacco use? My guess the answer is no.
If I’m correct then you need to rethink your position on protecting the health of the people in your little slice of paradise. Hey, the tourist might stop coming but you will have the healthiest little islands in the world. Just think about it….if you do one you must do the other or else your government is nothing short of being hypocritical.
