Shelter wardens trained

The Red Cross recently trained 22 volunteers as shelter wardens, covering such topics as shelter rules, psychological support, personal preparedness and radio and communication.

The Red Cross received support from Aviation Communication, which donated its technician’s time and expertise to develop the communication aspect of the training, said a Red Cross press release.

The volunteers practiced using VHF radios until they felt confident that they had a thorough understanding of how to use them should any kind of disaster arise.

‘As is the case in most volunteer activities, the volunteers take their own initiative to participate in various training which enhances their skills and enables them to contribute to their communities,’ said Red Cross Director Jondo Obi.

As the Red Cross busily prepares for hurricane season by training shelter wardens and ensuring adequate emergency supplies are stocked in all the containers on the three islands they wish to remind all the citizens of Cayman of their message – be prepared.

The Red Cross is working towards a fundraising objective of raising $200,000 this year and part of these funds are to be used to stock the containers.
