Today’s Editorial June 11: Little League expansion deserves support

An invaluable Caymanian youth programme needs help from the business community. Cayman Islands Little League has delivered pure joy to thousands of children over the last several years.

Kids ranging in age from five to 17 have benefited from the opportunity to play T-ball and baseball on high quality fields with top-notch equipment.

It is remarkable that the Cayman Islands Little League Association has been able to provide its services to so many players (more than 500 per season) at no charge.

Keeping the league free is not easy, however.

All those bats and balls – and especially that impressive four-field facility in George Town – cost money.

In order to maintain the programme’s quality and to keep it free to all players, a steady flow of sponsorship dollars is necessary, say Cayman Islands Little League Association officials.

This is more crucial than ever now as the league is about to expand its facility.

There are plans to add an additional two fields and provide a parking lot for parents.

The new fields and parking space is considered vital and long overdue by some.

Saturday mornings, for example, can be challenging with hundreds of parents jockeying for parking space along the fences.

Association officials have consistently expressed their gratitude to the many Cayman businesses that have supported the league over the years.

Their sponsorship has allowed the organisation to succeed.

That success, however, now demands growth.

And growth requires more sponsors.

So long as hundreds of children are able to learn sports skills and have fun under the guidance of good-hearted adults, Little League will remain a worthy target for sponsorship dollars.

One of the most impressive accomplishments of Little League is that every year it succeeds in attracting a pool of players that reflects the real population of the Cayman Islands.

Every team is a mix of Caymanian children and children of parents here on work permits.

Anyone who sees teams made up of these diverse kids working together to learn new skills or to win games will find it difficult not to have confidence in Cayman’s future.

The Caymanian Compass encourages the business community to support Cayman Islands Little League.
