Cayman Brac High School is about to celebrate 40 Years of Excellence with a not-to-be-missed weekend of activities, starting with Career Talks by Alumni on Friday.
The graduating Class of 2007, as well as Year 10 and 11 students are looking forward to this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to hear from those who have literally sat in their seats and gone on to excel in various careers, taking their place among the movers and shakers – not only in the Caymanian community, but indeed around the world. Among other notable alumni who will address the students is Dr. Martha Kay Williams nee Bodden, a lead scientist at NASA’s Cape Kennedy.
A homecoming reception will be held at the Aston Rutty Centre that evening, featuring the launch of the Cayman Brac High School 40th Anniversary commemorative book.
This coffee-table edition is the firs publication to capture the history of this educational institution, which opened over 40 years ago on January 23 under the leadership of Mr Layman E. Scott Sr. as principal.
The hard-cover book chronicles the challenging early history of what was originally named Cayman Brac Secondary Modern School and is being pre-sold through various outlets in Cayman Brac as well as Grand Cayman. The 7.30pm reception is open to all former and current students and students, former and current principals, faculty, staff and sponsors and their guests and will include government officials and other invited guests.
The CBHS magazine, which was produced by students and staff advisors especially to mark this occasion, will also be on sale. Other highlights of the evening will be the announcement of homecoming king and queen and live entertainment featuring the school bands and the never-to-be-forgotten school song, Broken Springs.
Former students are already busy checking their attics and sorting through old photographs to share in a display of memorabilia and a slide show.
An all-Island fair – the brainchild of one of the original teachers, Mr G. Hartwell Wood – was held on the school campus 40 years ago and that memorable event is being resurrected on Saturday, June 30 on the school site. The public is invited to a day of fun and gates open at 10am with free admission for all. Former Miss Cayman Brac and Miss Teen Cayman Brac title holders will be featured in the Parade of Beauties.
As part of this special occasion, CBHS will offer former students an opportunity to step back in time as they tour the high school facility, viewing displays of various school activities including arts and crafts. The ever-popular Cayman Brac food will be on sale and music, games, variety shows, sports and other competitions, and even a bouncing castle, will provide entertainment for fair-goers of all ages. Besides the publications, other commemorative take-home souvenirs, including T-shirts, bags, mugs, and mouse pads, will be available for purchase.
The highlight of the weekend will be the formal alumni dinner at Aston Rutty Centre on Saturday, beginning at 7pm, and Governor Stuart Jack and Mrs. Jack will be guests of honour. The evening will include recognition of outstanding past students and pre-purchased tickets are a must, as seating is limited!
A multi-congregational worship service on Sunday July at the Veterans and Seaman’s Centre will begin at 11am, with a sermon by the Rev. Charles ‘Rex’ Hurlston, who was among the first group of students to be enrolled. A moment of silence will be observed in memory of all deceased alumni whose names will be presented in a roll call. Immediately following the service there will be an awards ceremony with presentation of prizes and appreciation awards.
An informal family picnic is planned for Monday, 2 July, at the Bluff-top Agriculture Show Grounds, 10 am until…
Hamburgers and hot dogs with soft drinks will be available. There will be lots of fun and games for all the family with music, and a good time to just relax and enjoy a great day with friends. An added attraction will be three wading pools, courtesy of Pools By Us.
