Wild side walk

Daniella Christian of the Brac and friend Violet Walton enjoyed some of Grand Cayman’s wildlife during a recent visit after winning the National Trust’s Earth Day art competition.

Daniella’s entry became the logo for Earth Week 2007 in the Cayman Islands and her reward was a day trip for two to Grand Cayman including guided tours of the Mastic Trail, Blue Iguana Recovery Programme and a visit to the Trust’s offices.

“I had no idea of how wild the Mastic Trail would be. I felt when we were on the trail that we were just making the path ourselves. It gave me this amazing one-with-nature feeling. Everything was very colourful in a very unique way — especially all the animals and birds,’ said Daniella. ‘I didn’t realise that the Cayman Islands had this kind of biodiversity. Things like the big, quiet lizards, the birds and the giant ferns. I was surprised at how friendly all the animals were.’

She and her friend were accompanied by Trust Field Officer Paul Watler who commented, ‘The interest expressed in Cayman’s natural heritage by both young ladies was very encouraging. Enthusiasm for nature is a wonderful trait in a young person, and it would be fantastic to have more environmentally minded high school folks involved in the programs and volunteer projects we administrate.’

Public education for all ages is an important aspect of the Trust’s mission and the logo contest was one way to create awareness among Cayman’s young people for their surroundings. Second place in the contest went to Brian Myers and Third place prize went to Abbey Haylock, both from Cayman Prep High School.
