Keenan Ebanks was the surprise victor in the ‘Byte’ sailboat class in the first ever Scotiabank National Youth Sailing Championships, which was held recently at the Cayman Islands Sailing Club (CISC).
In light and shifty conditions, Keenan outfought more experienced sailors to walk off with the trophy.
There were 17 competitors in all, sailing in Bytes, Optimists and Fevas. Nine races were held over the two days.

‘The biggest surprise of the regatta was Keenan Ebanks winning first in the Byte class,’ said Michael Weber, Sailing Director of the CISC. ‘Keenan has only been sailing with us for 10 months and beat some of the sailors who have been sailing for years. He is a natural and has plenty of potential to be one of Cayman’s best youth sailors.’
Mr Weber also paid tribute to leading financial services group Scotiabank for supporting the event. Cathy McLean of Scotiabank was on hand to present the awards to the winners.
The regatta will be held annually to determine Cayman’s best sailors under the age of 18.
