To launch its activities for the year, the Young Business and Professional Women’s Club presented the Young Parents’ Programme with a donation.
The Young Parents Programme was created by the Department of Social Services (now the Department of Children and Family Services) and has been managed for a number of years by Brenda Dawkins, who consistently extends a warm welcome to young mothers, said a press release from the group.
There are nine young women ages 14 through 21 and eight babies, newborn to nine months, in the programme.
Young BPW members Joy Coe, Tesia Scott, Alexa Thomas and Acting President Charmaine Moss were on hand to present the young parents in attendance with three gift baskets consisting of baby supplies. On hand to receive the gifts were four young mothers and one expectant mother. At the end of the presentation Yolanda Frederick gave a vote of thanks on behalf of the school.
Ms Moss addressed the young ladies and staff stating that, ‘Young BPW as a Club, hopes this donation fully demonstrates their support of the young parents in the programme and is in fact a worthwhile contribution to our society. We are aware that many young people struggle after having a child or even at school, finding one or two subjects particularly difficult.
‘With this we intend to play a part in the young parents’ lives and to continue to encourage them and show them they can excel in spite of their circumstances.’
The Young BPW members look forward to arranging and presenting a short talk to the Young Parents Programme on personal ethics including: self-esteem building, comportment and etiquette.
The Young BPW Club has decided to move forward with this presentation for the young parents as it has been said that values, morals and ethics are inextricably tied together. It is felt that the presentation would be an invaluable lesson to the young mothers because values are what we learn from childhood from our parents and immediate surroundings; morals are the intrinsic beliefs developed from the value systems of how we ‘should’ behave in any given situation; and ethics, on the other hand, are how we actually do behave in the face of difficult situations that test our moral fiber, the release said.
Young BPW hopes this will make a positive contribution to the young mothers.
The scheduled presentation is in keeping with the aims and objectives of the parent organization Business and Professional Women’s Club which include; working towards the improvement of economic, employment and social conditions for women, striving for high standards of service in business, the professions, industry and public life, and encouraging and assisting women and children to acquire education and training.
