Racism a dangerous divide

I am saddened and disappointed by the flurry of recent letters in relation to Caymanians vs Expats that I consider to be racist in content.

Although I do not have status or permanent residency, all of my family has represented the Cayman Islands internationally at various events so I hope that no one takes offence when I refer to Cayman as our country.

Our country is recovering, and extremely well when compared to regional partners, from a national disaster and needs all of our positive energy to continue so to do.

Consider also that the best sporting teams in the world usually have a mix of nationalities, skills and backgrounds that make up for a winning recipe.

Over the years our country has followed that pattern and that has placed us in the elite sections of the financial and tourism industries worldwide.

It has been a long haul since we were ravaged in September 2004 and we still have a long way to go.

It may be that which is causing frustration and bringing some of these dangerous attitudes to the fore.

I urge that we all adopt a solid and positive attitude that embraces working and living with our neighbours from wherever they hail.

Racism is corruptive, divisive, destructive and corrosive and has no place in our society, so let us all continue without it.
