Guidelines set for new healthcare facilities

The Health Practice Commission has published a set of guidelines for new healthcare facilities.

The guidelines apply to the conversion of existing buildings as well as new construction, said a GIS press release.

The newly-established guidelines require developers of new healthcare facilities to submit an Outline Application to the HPC with details of the facility’s planned outlay, staff contingent, special equipment, procedures to be done and the fee structure.

The owner/developer must also submit an application to the Planning Department.

After reviewing the submission, the Commission may give approval in principle. However, final certificate of operation for the facility will be further subject to the owner/developer submitting the following information:

the names of all staff, including registered practitioners and their registration certificates;

malpractice insurance certificates for all registered practitioners employed by the health care facility

health insurance certificates for all employees, and a certificate of public liability insurance.

This submission should be made at least one month prior to the facility’s planned opening date.

Following a final inspection from the HPC, and the owner/developer meeting planning requirements, the Planning Department will issue a certificate of occupancy. The facility will then receive its certificate to operate from the HPC, with or without conditions, the release said.

The Commission advises that owners of existing healthcare facilities who want to modify their buildings must submit an application to the Planning Department ensuring that all changes comply with current planning requirements.

The Commission will advise the Director of Planning on applications for the development of new healthcare facilities, as well as modifications to existing ones.
