Student Abigail Stoddart is on her way to the colder climes of Scotland to begin her university studies and with the help of a local support group, she’ll have a computer and warm clothing to ward off Aberdeen’s chill winds.
She is the fourth student this year to receive assistance in the form of a cheque for US$1,000 from the New Self-Help Community Foundation, which raises funds at its Annual Talent Exposition of the Arts and through donations from supporters.
The Foundation’s chief executive officer JC Connor said the money would help Miss Stoddart to begin her Fall semester at Aberdeen University “with a laptop computer and winter clothing”.
Ms Stoddart, 19, is an honour student of John Gray High School and of Cayman Prep and High School’s Sixth Form programme. She represented the Cayman Islands at the 2009 Global Youth Leadership Conference and captained the Women of Valour Basketball team.
She leaves for Aberdeen on 8 September to take up her studies of accounting and finance.
“It will be my first time in Scotland. I have an aunt who lives there,” she said.
Mr. Connor said the donation to Ms Stoddart was an “investment” by The New Self-Help Community Foundation, a non-profit organisation that aims to help teenaged youth develop a sense of self-worth, independence and community spirit, and demonstrated the value the Foundation sees in Miss Stoddart and other young people.
“The Foundation understands the importance of giving to the community, and in the process, conscientiously invests in the human potential; helping to prepare our young people for the coming new global knowledge-based economy and society,” Mr. Connor said.
