After a successful tournament at a new venue, darts is ready for its next event.
The Cayman Islands Darts Association will stage its Annual General Meeting next Monday, 12 September. The Grand Caymanian resort will host the gathering from 7.30pm. Aside from the election of an executive board for the 2011-2012 campaign, the occasion will be a time to honour past players from as far back as the 1970s.
Association President Paul Anglin states on the whole he is encouraged by the level of interest in darts.
“I’m happy to say that interest in the sport is slowly growing once again,” Anglin said. “We have approximately 20-30 new players playing in open competitions and are ready to join the association.”
News of the meeting comes after last month’s inaugural darts competition at the Grand Caymanian. In all, 26 players came out and were randomly split into 13 teams using a blind draw format. Among the notable players were Filipino stalwarts Rodan Asuncion, Jasper Esguerra and Randy Cruz. Other notable players included Cliff Weeks and Cassius Anglin. A decent crowd was on hand to catch the action including community figure Reginald ‘Choppy’ Delapenha.
Filipino players Mel Tagalog and Johnny Dulnagen would place first and take home the roughly $127 cash prize. Anglin and relative unknown Matt Lee would be the runners-up and earn roughly $50 in cash.
Anglin states the tournament was a good effort ahead of the slate of competitions coming up this year.
“It was a good tournament, I enjoyed it. It was very competitive and it ran smoothly. I’m happy to see while I was in my role of president that I could compete with the best dart players and beat them. I’m looking forward to more tournaments.”
