A pair of basketball programmes are taking place for Cayman’s youth this month.
First up is the annual Under-19 basketball league. Typically sponsored by law firm Appleby, the competition caters to both girls and boys. This year’s event is slated to run from 17 September to 10 December. Focus will be on whether Aaron Kennedy and the Wolves along with La-Torae Nixon and the Sparks can retain their championships.
From there comes the first ever Cayman Islands Basketball Academy youth academy. Starting 24 September the first term of the initiative will last until 17 December at the First Baptist Church multipurpose hall. Sessions are slated to take place Saturday mornings for kids aged 7-15 from 9am to 12.30pm.
The Cayman Islands Basketball Association released a statement talking about the need for the academy. The statement reads, “For years there have been requests from the public regarding a programme for younger children such as an upward basketball programme. The academy is a place where children can be exposed to the sport of basketball at a much earlier age and is a programme that is consistently available to children with an interest to learn the sport.
“The Academy Director is Victor “Voot” O’Garro and he is excited to bring this programme on stream. Among the objectives for the programme is to use basketball as a tool to develop good citizens; to introduce/teach fundamentals of basketball, providing a good foundation for future participation in the sport and to increase levels of participation for health and self-esteem improvement in our youth.”
After this month’s term, there are two more sessions slated for next year. They will run 21 January to 31 March and then 7 April to 30 June.
The academy is not free, costing $75 per child (which includes an academy jersey). Registration is taking place from 7-16 September.
