The 2011/2012 Cayman Premier League got off to a good start for Scholars International Sports Club. The West Bay side dominated Cayman Athletic Sports Club 5-2 at the G. Haig Bodden field in Bodden Town last Sunday.
Scholars head coach Colin Rowe states the focus is on winning matches.
“Scholars International has a few new imports this season,” Rowe said. “There is Thomas Elliot, Carson Fagan, Damalay Howelle, Wayne Smith, Dave McLaughlin, Alexis Reve and Davion Wright. The team is not currently at one hundred per cent however the training has been going well and the team chemistry is looking good.
“The team is still getting to know each other and the new players are adapting well. The aim this season is to win trophies.”
Of the new recruits, Fagan had the biggest impact in Sunday’s game. Last season’s player of the year scored Scholars’ first goal from the 18 yard box and added another late in the first half. Among the other stand-outs for Scholars were Ericksen Brown (a goal) and Lenox Brown (who assisted with most goals).
Ernie ‘Gillie’ Seymour, team director and head coach of Cayman Athletic Sports Club, stated in passing that his team is currently going through a transition, as some of players have moved on to play with other teams. Nevertheless Seymour got a solid showing from goal scorers Kyle Santamaria and Nigel Solomon along with Carlos Welcome.
In other action from around the Cayman Premier League last Sunday, Tigers FC came back from a two-goal deficit to tie 3-3 with Bodden Town FC, who ended the game with nine men. George Town SC got off to a sluggish start but came from behind twice to overcome Future SC 3-2 as Fabian Malcolm produced the winning goal in the 85th minute. Malcolm’s stunning strike nested in the top corner leaving Future’s goalkeeper no chance; a goal worthy of winning any game. Roma United took all three points from Elite SC with a last-minute strike upsetting the defending Premier League champions.
