Take a dive at celebrating as part of the Brac Bash

Cayman Brac is getting ready to leap into party mode with a series of events from Friday, 30 September, to Sunday, 2 October.

The Brac Bash is a kaleidoscope of activities, which begins with what is sure to be a fabulous kick off party and barbecue on Friday, 30 September from 7pm to midnight at Brac Reef Beach Resort.

First thing in the morning – that’s Saturday, 1st October, Cemetery Pier and Scott’s Dock hosts a craft market, showcasing local wares and techniques from 9am to 1pm – lunch begins at midday so you can get stuck in to all those delicious traditional local goodies.

From 1.30pm to 5pm there are free snorkelling tours of the MV Capt. KP Tibbets Russian Frigate 356. Remember to bring your own gear to have a tour round this magnificent vessel which was sunk 15 years ago. Departures are at 1.45pm, 3pm and 4.15pm.

Cook-off

All that exercise, of course, is enough to make anyone’s tummy rumble and the Brac Bash Cook-Off begins at 4.30pm. Not only is there face painting, a bouncy castle, a raffle and music but there is the famous tasting and judging of the delicious dishes under the categories of appetiser, entree, dessert and lion fish. Note that a fee of $10 applies for entry per dish category.

The drawing of the raffle and the presentations are scheduled for 6.30pm, which precedes a domino tournament held in conjunction with Cayman Brac Pirates Week Committee. That’s at the Coral Isle Club and has a $15 game entry fee attached. No doubt it will be as competitively friendly as ever and with plenty of good laughs along the way.

Finally, on Sunday, 2 October, there’s the Island-wide scavenger hunt. Teams of up to five people either between age 4 and 11 or 12 and older congregate at 2pm for this event, which is $5 per team. Expect the unexpected and get those lateral thinking muscles working!

A bit of history

The MV Keith Tibbetts was originally a soviet naval vessel, then the Koni II frigate 356 was sold to Cuba. These days, the ship is familiarly named the MV Keith Tibbets after its deliberate scuttling off the Brac in 1996 to create a dive attraction and artificial reef.

Ivan had a bite in 2004, breaking the ship in two, but the wreck remains a great attraction for divers far and wide. Celebrating the 15th anniversary of her sinking, the Brac Bash has a series of events lined up. People continue to dive the wreck as the ever-developing flora and fauna on the artificial reef remains a splendid part of Cayman’s tourism and diving offering and certainly will do for many years to come.
