Dione Scotland’s forthcoming photography exhibition, Simply Colours, at Full of Beans cafe will be a marked departure from her previous exhibition, Cayman Captures.
Although still capturing the scenery of Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac, she says that the natural landscapes and indigenous wildlife that made up her last exhibition received minimal adjustments and Photoshopping.
“In this upcoming exhibition, Simply Colours. the photographs are all landscapes taken with an infrared filter. The effect produced from the filter is a photograph that has varying tones of reds and magenta depending on the length of exposure,” explains Dione.
The photos have been further processed with photographic software and displayed in custom-framed canvas and metallic framed prints, to dramatic effect.
Her passion
Although her photographic subjects include pets, family portraits and astro-photography (which involves attaching her camera to her telescope with specialised accessories) it is landscape and wildlife photography that is her real passion.
“I would love for one of my photographs to make it into one of the issues of National Geographic,” she says.
When shooting photos her goal, Dione says, is “to capture photographs that are striking when first looked at and remembered thereafter.”
By day however, you are more likely to find Dione assisting with surgeries, nursing, and educating owners of pets on their proper care. As a board certified veterinary technician, her working days are filled with her other passion: her furry friends.
Growing up surrounded by pets, Dione was fascinated by animals from a young age and in high school was already spending her free time working as a veterinary assistant. Once she graduated high school she dedicated herself to studying Veterinary Technology in Florida.
Her interest in photography dates as far back as her interest in animals, however.
“I have always had an interest in photography as far back as I can remember. I was always around the house with a point-and-shoot film camera given to me by my parents and photographing everyone and everything around,” she recalls.
Other than a few introductory courses over the years, Dione is largely a self-taught photographer, although she admits it is an ongoing process. “I am [..] still learning, as there are always advances with the ever changing photography world.”
While she is happy working as a veterinary technician and being a part-time photographer, she has not ruled out photography as a full-time occupation at some point in the future.
