CISPA
After the success of last year’s Numeracy Strategy programme, the Cayman Islands Society of Professional Accountants (CISPA) have once again placed volunteers from their membership in local primary schools to assist with the Numeracy Strategy. The pilot programme ran in the second half of last year at Red Bay Primary School. This year the programme has expanded to include Prospect Primary School. A total of 37 volunteers will either help out weekly with after school math clubs or will spend one hour per week assisting in an allocated classroom.
HedgeServ
The global hedge fund administrator HedgeServ announced it will expand Irish operations with the creation of an additional 300 jobs in Dublin. HedgeServ currently manages more than $130 billion of client assets and employs 425 staff at offices in Dublin, London, New York, Chicago and the Cayman Islands. Over the past 12 months the company has increased its Irish workforce by 150 to 230.
Ogier
Legal and fiduciary firm Ogier has donated CI$3,000 to the Cayman Islands Lighthouse School. The firm’s Child and Family Welfare Committee, in conjunction with its Arts and Culture Committee, raised funds for the event Ogier Night at the Prospect Playhouse, which encouraged staff to support the Cayman Drama Society’s production of the musical Godspell.
The donations presented to the Cayman Islands Lighthouse School’s Home School Association is to be used for the “Caught Being Good” initiative, which is part of the school’s positive behaviour incentive programme. The programme focuses on rewarding the positive behaviour of students.
Sagicor
George Town Primary School has become the first recipient of the Sagicor Adopt-A-School programme, with long-serving school principal Marie Martin accepting the donation to a maximum value of US$15,000. Most of the Sagicor donation, Ms Martin said, will be used to address some immediate needs at George Town Primary, including enhancing its Breakfast Feeding Programme and establishing technology-driven programmes for academically-challenged students.
LIME
At the Chamber of Commerce Business Expo, LIME launched a personal mobile-broadband router called ‘MiFi’, which allows up to five devices to connect to the Internet at the same time.
The portable modem Huawei® E586 has a five hour battery-life and works at a distance of up to 30 feet.
It provides simultaneous Internet access to Wi-Fi enabled devices such as laptops, tablets, media players, digital cameras and video game consoles.
Harneys
International offshore law firm Harneys has appointed former XXIV Old Buildings barrister David Herbert to lead its Cayman Islands litigation and insolvency team.
Mr. Herbert has been associated with Harneys since 2003 and was seconded to the firm’s Cayman Islands office full-time in 2009. His primary areas of expertise are insolvency and restructuring, trust advice and litigation, and company and business disputes. Recently he has acted for Harneys in the high-profile liquidation of the SPhinX Group and is currently acting in the $10 billion Saad Group fraud litigation.
Maples and Calder
Offshore law firm Maples and Calder won two awards at the 2011 IFLR Middle East Awards. Acting as Cayman Islands counsel on two award winning deals, Maples and Calder was part of the teams which received awards for Debt and Equity Linked Deal of the Year and Project Finance Deal of the Year. The winning deals were the Shuweihat 3 IPP project and HSBC Bank Middle East Sukuk, a US$5 billion sukuk programme. Maples and Calder advised on a total of 8 deals which were nominated for this year’s awards.

Cayman National
More than 100 Cayman National staff and their families weathered the downpours and strong wind gusts to take part in the corporation-wide team building event, The Faceoff.
The Grand Caymanian Resort hosted the competition and fun day, where staff either competed or cheered on their favourite team in beach games organised by Red Sail Sports.
Randomly assigned teams made up of employees from across the corporation came up with creative names, themes and attire, from Hawaiian grass skirts to bright face paint, as they prepared to take on their colleagues in a series of friendly, but competitive, beach games.
