Ritz succeeding through service

On 4 November, 21 pairs of Reading Buddies from The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman and Sir John A. Cumber Primary met their partners for the 2011-2012 program at an orientation at the resort.

About half are new matches while the rest will be continuing on with their buddies from the previous school year reading with them once a week.

On 10 November, from 9am to 10am, ladies and gentlemen from the resort will lead a wellness seminar for 88 Year 5 students studying nutrition and its impact on the human body. Periwinkle Chef Garry O’Connor will lead sessions and share examples of healthy eating

These programs are part of The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman Community Footprints program and its Succeed Through Service efforts which focus on helping children better prepare for college, work and life by engaging them in service-learning and career exploration.

When Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman Human Resources Director Janette Goodman, who leads the Community Footprints efforts, first joined the resort she realised hospitality and tourism are not top of mind as a career path for older children in Cayman, so the resort said it decided to extend our Succeed Through Service programmes to younger children.

She approached Sir John A. Cumber Primary to form a relationship, which in addition to the popular Reading Buddy programme, has also included a science camp with the resort’s engineering team, campus beautification efforts and visits to the resort to see practical applications of science curriculum with the landscaping team and pastry chefs.
