Kickers top white collar bill

Kick boxing and white collar fighting are the treat for fans of combat sport this weekend.

On Saturday night gates open at 6.30pm at Treasure Island for the annual White Collar Boxing Fight Night. Five white collar bouts and the first kick boxing fight in the Cayman Islands will top off a great evening of fights.

Organisers Lachie Hewitt and Chris Dinan of Rogue Gym are excited to let loose the latest batch of white collar boxers who have been training hard for months for this event.

Rogue Gym on West Bay Road is in front of CrossFit Seven Mile. It is home to most of the fighters and they have shown huge improvement with the help of a great facility and also marvellous guest trainers like Andrew Ford who have made sure they know what they are doing when getting in the ring.

The white collar programme at Rogue Gym is open to non-boxers or boxers with minimal boxing experience. It’s a very intense programme that takes novices from lacing on a boxing glove for the first time to fighting centre stage on a big fight night. Throughout the programme those involved learn everything from how to throw an uppercut to how to skip like a pro.

The programme climaxes in a big fight night when newcomers are matched with another white collar boxer of their own level and experience.

Hewitt said: “We have fighters from all backgrounds and abilities who all have put their hearts and souls into making the upcoming event a great show. On top of that we hope to raise money for the Cayman Island Diabetes Association and proceeds from every ticket and t-shirt will go to the cause so please come and support the event.

“Each event has been growing with the numbers of fighters and the standard of boxing we hope next year to have two events so if you’re interested in signing up then please come down to Rogue Gym and get started. Each fight night is aimed at creating exposure and raising money for a different charities.”

Topping the bill is the three round kick boxing match between Omar Dickson and Bruce Coulson at 160lbs with 10oz gloves. Dickson, 28, is a carpenter at McAlpine. Coulson, 27, works for Cayman Imports.

Dickson said: “I’m really excited and have trained hard to win. I’m more of a kicker and grappler than he is so what I aim to do is beat out his legs then start exchanging punches.

“I’ll be faster with my feet and I think I can win in two rounds. Bruce is taller and has a longer reach but I’ve been sparring with bigger people and never had any problems.”

Bruce is being trained by his big brother Tim who is a karate black belt. Tim said: “It’ll be an interesting fight. Bruce is mainly a boxer who likes to take it to the ground and this could be his fight because he is good at striking. Omar is more a grappler but there is no ground fighting in this match. Bruce’s height and reach advantage will definitely be a factor.”

Tickets are $25 each and can be purchase at Rogue Gym or at The Clubhouse in Treasure Island. For more information on the night contact Lachie on 324-1800 or go to www.roguegym.com
