Combat fans will be treated to Cayman’s first ever kick boxing fight this weekend as the main bill on an explosive white collar show.
It’s at a new venue, Treasure Island, on West Bay Road between local fighters Bruce Coulson and Omar Dickson and promises to be a spectacular three round contest. Organised by Rogue Gym owner Lachie Hewitt and promoter Chris Dinan, this show pits some of the best white collar fighters on island against each other.
White collar boxing is aimed at fighters – usually office workers – with little or no previous experience in the sport who don’t want to compete at amateur level but still want to learn the basic skills and test themselves against similar opponents. It started amongst Wall Street execs around 20 years ago and has spread around the world.
Local martial arts instructor Bob Daigle helped put the kick boxing bout together. Daigle, who is training Dickson, said: “When I heard that Rogue Gym would be hosting the popular white collar boxing event again I asked if they would consider allowing us to put one kick boxing fight on their fight card and they agreed.”
Anyone who is a martial arts fan will enjoy this clash. Both fighters will be hitting full force with punches, spinning back fists, kicks to the legs, body and head.
Coulson, 27, is a Caymanian and Dixon, 28, is a Cayman resident form Nicaragua. Coulson has been training in boxing for around seven years. He is being trained by his brother Tim, a karate black belt and one of the best strikers in Cayman. Bruce is very experienced in combat sports having fought on Proving Ground mixed martial arts shows in the past.
Dickson has been training with Master Steve Graham of Ooi’s Tae Kwon Do. His record is 1-0 in MMA. This will be his first amateur kick boxing fight.
Hewitt said: “We would like to thank our main sponsor CayBrew for their support. There are five white collar boxing fights scheduled in addition to the kick boxing match. This should a great night of fights which will start at 7.30pm.”
“We have sold around 300 tickets and hope to get close to 500 on the night. There’s been a great amount of support from the public.
“The kick boxing will be very entertaining especially for those who have never seen a bout before. It promises fireworks. Both guys have trained hard and are looking at putting their skills to use. People will definitely enjoy the variety of fighting styles throughout the night.”
Hewitt expects all five white collar bouts to be pretty close. “A few of the guys have really developed along the way and I expect some to be a reasonably good level for white collar. All the guys who have got on board our white collar programme at Rogue were pretty raw and have not done much at all as far as boxing is concerned, but what a commitment all of them have shown.
“Some stands outs have been Adam Cockerill and Rob Mahadeo who have both come a long way and show some impressive skills now. I expect both of their opponents will have trouble getting on top of them but it is boxing so anything can happen on the night.
“We could not have got these guys to such a good level without the help also of trainers at Rogue like Nicole Frolick for intense circuit training and providing all the restorative yoga classes which has kept the injuries down.
“Also Andrew Ford who has come along and supervised the sparring classes and given the guys some valuable one on one. Everyone has put in and the results will show on the night.”
Interest in white collar boxing is growing in the Caribbean, especially in the Bahamas. Hewitt is interested in matching his best white collar fighters against theirs. “We would love to host an international white collar in the future. There is definitely a market for it here and the interest only keeps growing and growing. We look forward to building up the event more with another bout mid next year so any interested parties get down to Rogue Gym and sign up soon.”
