Butler steams in like a pirate

The annual Pirates Swim 5k went well with the predictable early finishers being the youngsters. Despite the distance, it was still a photo finish with Geoffrey Butler having to find a sprint finish to beat out the ever improving Alex McCallum. Butler finsihed in 1 hour 8 minutes and 18 seconds with McCallum two seconds behind.

Josh Bain wasn’t far behind and he was closely followed by Christopher Courtis with Simon Butler, Geoff’s younger brother, coming fifth.

Being Pirates Week, swimmer Sally Poole got into the spirit and wore an appropriate swimsuit with pirate theme images on it. Thankfully, she was not kidnapped by a hoard of marauding, drunken pirates outraged by her costume.

Coral Tomascik was sixth and first female home, ahead of Special Olympics star Andrew Smilley. American visitor Susie Ernsting was eighth and Bill McFarland came next. Governor Duncan Taylor seems to send more time in the water than out of it at the moment and he finished 22nd. At least he didn’t have far to go home after the exhausting event because it started and finished outside his home. All but one of the 32 starters finished.
