The Cayman Islands Red Cross is appealing for 50 runners to run for the Red Cross during the 2011 Intertrust Cayman Islands Marathon on 4 December.
“We are looking for walkers, joggers and runners – individuals or teams – to tackle on the half, full or the relay on behalf of the Red Cross,” said Jondo Obi, branch director of the organisation.
The “50 for 50” effort is the final event in the organisation’s 50th anniversary celebration, with participating runners asked to raise $500 for the organisation. In return, they will be able to take advantage of the early bird fee, which closed on 1 September, and will receive a special commemorative item from the Red Cross for their participation, along with plenty of encouragement from dedicated Red Cross volunteers who will be on hand to cheer, offer water and first aid to all participants.
“This is really a fun event and we are hoping to get people of different abilities to represent the organisation out on the course,” she said.
According to Carolina Ferreira, deputy director of the organisation, crossing the finish line creates a unique sense of accomplishment.
“I ‘only’ did the half, and I can tell you that I was riding that high for days after the event. It’s a pretty incredible experience – there are times when it is you and the road and just when you feel like you can’t do it anymore you get a boost from spectators, water booth volunteers and even our first aiders. There is nothing quite like it and I can’t wait to actually run the full thing,” she said.
All participants of the Cayman Islands Marathon will be doing it for a great cause as proceeds raised from the event go directly to the Cayman Islands Cadet Corps and the local cancer society.
“Running in the “50 for 50” should be an even greater incentive because in reality you are helping out three worthy causes by participating in one event! What better way to close out the year than by doing that?” said Ms Ferreira.
