Charles ‘The Killa’ Whittaker embarks on the next stage of his roller coaster career and this time he hopes it will lead to that elusive world title shot.
Whittaker, 37, fights for the United States Boxing Association junior-middleweight championship at the Arts and Recreation Centre in Camana Bay on Saturday on a bill titled ‘Ambush at the Bay’.
He faces Florida-based David Toribio from the Dominican Republic, in what could be an explosive fight because both have pretty high knockout ratios.
Killa’s record is 36 wins 12 losses and two draws, including 23 KOs. Toribio’s record is 19 wins and 12 losses and includes 12 KOs.
Killa said: “I’m ready and very excited. I’m in great shape and looking forward to putting on a good show. My trainer Norman Wilson is pleased with how well I’ve got in shape and that is partly thanks to the excellent sparring I’ve had with my two partners who will fight each other on the bill.”
They are Haiti-born Wilky ‘Silky’ Campfort, 26, who has only lost once in eight bouts and scored four knockouts and Tsetsi ‘Lights Out’ Davis, 33, a Jamaican blacksmith who turned pro two years. He has one loss and four wins. They are the main support fight.
There are four other bouts on the undercard. Two are between US based fighters and the other two have a local interest. Peter ‘Lightning’ Lewison from Prospect makes his pro debut at middleweight and the exceptional Filipino bantamweight amateur Alfred ‘Destroyer’ Deano also makes his debut.
Lewison has promised a knockout after plenty of sparring with heavyweight amateur Andrew Ford. Lewison, 22, takes on Jose Laguer and Deano faces Anthony Fraguada from Newark, New Jersey. Also on the bill are Damian Frias against Alex Perez and Sammy Payne takes on Roger Rosa.
Deano, 20, wants to showcase his talent to fulfil the backing received from Cayman businessman Al Suckoo who has paid all his expenses since March when he first arrived.
Southpaw Deano returns to the Philippines after this bout to continue his career with a series of fights in Davao City. He had 69 contests and only lost four as an amateur and was Filipino champion four times.
Having top quality sparring has really brought out the best in Whittaker who is raring to go. His trainer Norman Wilson said: “The camp has been great. Everybody is where they should be. It’s all worked out well. We did all our preparations in the Cayman Islands and didn’t have to go abroad.
“The sparring partners we brought also worked with Alfred which was very handy. The way I see it, Charles has to tune up before he goes for the super big fights. You’ve got to work your way up.”
Boxing programme head coach Donie Anglin will be refereeing some of the fights. He said; “I’m looking forward to the show and seeing Charles winning. I’m also keen to see how Alfred and Peter get on in their debuts.”
Tickets for Saturday’s boxing show which starts at 8pm at Camana Bay Arts and Recreation Centre range from $35 to VIP $125 and are available from Funky Tangs, Reflections, Four Winds Esso, Hardware Express, Devil’s Hangout or by calling 926-0749 or 926-8011.
