Going undefeated is a rare feat in sports, whether in Cayman or abroad. The latest side to earn that milestone was team Bodden Town.
The squad went 8-0 and defeated the Shockwaves in the 2011 PricewaterhouseCoopers Under-16 Basketball League. The victory marks the club’s second straight U16 championship.
Bodden Town were led by Finals Most Valuable Player Christopher Collins who had eight points and 15 rebounds. Collins would also earn Most Improved Player of the year after averaging under two points last season. Guiding Collins to his second title would be father and coach James ‘Cadillac’ Collins and head coach Tim Howard.
A number of players made a big impact for Bodden Town this year. Most notably were star big men David Scott (averaging 5.7 points per game), Shaquille Heath (who was fifth in rebounding averaging 11.3 rebounds) and guard Dominique Martucee (who was the league leader in assists averaging three dishes per game).
For Shockwaves the defeat comes in their first year of the competition. West Bay coaching prodigy Jonathan Powery led a team featuring stars Arin Taylor, Tevin Yen and Phillip Webb, the regular season Most Valuable Player.
On hand to distribute trophies was PWC representative Angilynn Chan. A player for the company’s co-ed softball team, Chan states supporting sports is a big part of PWC’s agenda.
“PWC has been sponsoring this league the last six years,” Chan said. “We’re happy to see the results of our involvement. This year there were six boys’ teams and it was a great job by technical director Victor O’Garro, Sports Director Collin Anglin and their team at the Cayman Islands Basketball Association.
“At the end of the day the kids are our future. We’re happy to sponsor a sports initiative like the basketball league which brings something positive to the island.”
