Cayman’s national men’s rugby team on Monday reflected on a positive performance, after they returned home, having lost 39-13 to Mexico, in Mexico City on Saturday.

The highly anticipated 15s test match served as the first for the Rugby Americas North region, after COVID derailed regular play.

Cayman Rugby Union director Jovan Bowles told the Cayman Compass, that while the results were not what they had hoped for, it was a learning experience for his players.

“Obviously very disappointed with the result but looking at what we have provided for the FFP Cayman National XV players is immense,” he said.

According to the Rugby Americas North match report, Mexico scored four tries in total, and Cayman’s lone try was a “highlight reel effort” from Zach Hutchinson, in the final minutes of the game.

Cayman travelled with 18 new players, who were all capped during the match against the Las Serpientes.

“We hope that the boost of 18 players to the squad will be beneficial to our development going into 2022,” Bowles said. “We look forward to continuing this out of competition with Mexico Rugby and we thank them for hosting this event very well.”

According to Bowles, Cayman will now turn their focus to the Rugby Americas North 2022 Championship.
