While the Omicron variant of the coronavirus caused subdued celebrations in much of the world, several hundred people including many families turned out for an early fireworks display at Camana Bay on Friday.
New York City scaled down its Times Square celebrations, London relegated its fireworks show to television and official New Year festivities in Paris were cancelled altogether.
In Cayman, a last minute change to COVID protocols allowed the island’s New Year’s Eve parties to go ahead after all.
Midnight closure rules for bars, nightclubs and other establishments, brought in response to the first cases of Omicron in mid-December, were lifted on Thursday, meaning that events could continue until the early hours of the morning.

Next year New Year’s Eve is Saturday.
If there isn’t a change then all dancing will have to stop at the stroke of midnight.
