Following the serious assault of two men in The Strand complex in early January, the Cayman LGBTQ Foundation is pleased to hear that a suspect has been arrested by police.
The two men who were assaulted had been in a vehicle and were approached by two men who made homophobic remarks towards them, eventually assaulting the men by repeatedly kicking and punching them.
I am glad that at least one of the men has been arrested on suspicion of assault.
This was an unprovoked, serious attack on two innocent people, so we are very pleased that the RCIPS has been able to properly investigate the crime and arrest one suspect.
I am particularly pleased with the tone taken by the RCIPS when it comes to this kind of hate crime.
The detective overseeing the investigation of this crime has stated that this type of homophobic violence towards innocent people is inexcusable and had no place in our community. It is good news that the police are taking this zero-tolerance stance towards hate crimes against the LGBTQ community and that they are conducting a thorough and diligent investigation, which we hope will bring the culprits to justice.
The Cayman LGBTQ Foundation looks forward to the court date for the suspect and will be closely following the outcome of the trial.
