Cayman’s CARIFTA junior hopefuls hit the track at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex for the 2022 All Comers Track Meet on Saturday, 12 Feb.

The meet, held under the Cayman Islands Athletics Association banner, featured more than 100 athletes ranging from under 9s to the open division.

With the CARIFTA Games around the corner, several of Cayman’s athletes were running to earn a place at the event, scheduled to take place this April in Jamaica.

Among the athletes trying to qualify for the one of the biggest youth competitions of the year was Aaliyannah Anderson of Mustang Track Club.

Anderson competed in the U17 100-metre dash, winning in a time of 12.76 seconds. However, her time was not enough to earn her a place at the games, where the standard time is 12.30.

She told the Cayman Compass after her race that, with several more opportunities left to qualify, she hopes to make it to the games in Jamaica.

“I got out of the blocks kind of slow, and it’s really hot,” she said. “I really want to go to CARIFTA. I haven’t gone for two years and I was supposed to go in 2021. So, I hope to go with all my friends.”

So far, one athlete – Davonte Howell in the 200m – has qualified for the 2022 games. The CIAA’s next meet is scheduled for Saturday, 26 Feb., at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex, starting at 3pm.
