The Cayman Rugby Union kicked off the first round of its Kirk Freeport Domestic Women’s League on Saturday, 19 March, at the South Sound Rugby Club.
The Kirk Freeport Black Diamonds defeated the KF Blue Sapphires 32-26 in the only match of the day.
“This is all part of the girls putting in [the work], improving their training skills, and is the first stage of… picking our team for the Commonwealth Games [and] Rugby World Cup Sevens qualifier,” CRU women’s rugby manager, Mercedes Foy, told the Cayman Compass.
She noted that her hope is to grow the women’s league over the long term, but as it stands currently, she said “it’s just important that the girls are playing”.
Foy added, “There’s a lot of girls out there that do not qualify to play for the Cayman Islands and we need to establish a solid, strong domestic game here on island for us to ever have a chance of being successful in any international tournament.”
Burger King Selects are scheduled to take Kirk Freeport Selects in the second round of the women’s league this Saturday, 26 March, which will be played between the men’s games at the South Sound Rugby Club, starting at 1pm.
