Up, up and away… for the Big Balloon Build

Local balloon artist Sharleen Duval prepares to show the world her skills

The level of creativity is astonishing.

If you’ve ever thought that those who laud the beauty of balloon art are just full of hot air, you might change your mind when you see what the experts can create.

Caymanian Sharleen Duval, owner of It’s Your Party, is one such expert, and she was selected from hundreds of applicants to help create the USA’s very first Big Balloon Build.

Fifty-five balloon artists from around the world have travelled to the City of Vincennes, Indiana, this April to create a massive candy-themed wonderland using 125,000 balloons, with giant ice cream cones, colossal cotton candy clouds and larger-than-life sweets to inspire the children in the community.

It’s like the Beast’s castle from the Disney classic!

Hasbro Inc., one of the largest toy companies in the world, has granted permission to use its trademarked game, Candy Land, as the inspiration for a giant board game out of balloons.

Following negotiations with the company, Stuart Davies, creator and director of the Big Balloon Build, said, “This is unbelievable news. Hasbro Inc. has granted [us]… the right to reproduce the entire Candy Land Board game, including the characters from within the game.

“Imagine you will be able to walk by King Kandy and his Giant Candy Castle as well as walking through a giant Lollypop Forest… and, to take it further, United Way of Knox County, Indiana, has plans to enable children and families to actually play the giant board game!”

The Big Balloon Build, of which Duval is a part, will be gifted to United Way of Knox County to help them raise awareness and funds for over 30 charities that they service in the community.

Extraordinary things can be created out of these simple, childhood favourites.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to do something bigger than myself and bring joy to children and adults alike after such a stressful year around the world,” Duval said. “Excited doesn’t even begin to express how I feel! I get to do what I love while giving back to the Vincennes community.

“A big bonus is that I am getting hands-on experience with fellow balloon professionals from around the world, not to mention the fun we will have while creating this balloon wonder. This build will enable me to increase my skills, bring those back home and offer more exciting options to my clients and customers.”
