The owners of U’nique restaurant certainly chose an apt name.
For starters, even before you walk in the door, actually locating this fairly new addition to the local dining scene is a bit of a treasure hunt.
Positioned at 72 North Church Street around the back of the building that houses, among other businesses, Digicel, U’nique challenges drivers to keep their eyes peeled for its sign, or they’ll end up crawling along the main road like they’re casing the joints in the area.
We finally twigged that we had to turn down Mary St., then make a left into Rock Hole Rd., and – aided by a little bit of squinting at night – found the parking lot, which led to the restaurant’s front door.
U’nique is a small place, with a nice bar and indoor and outdoor seating available. It’s charming, intimate and friendly. What really sets it apart, however, is the food.
From the moment it opened (about as softly as it gets) at the end of 2021, there were whispers on social media, raving about meals enjoyed there. Of course, we had to go along and see what all the fuss was about.
Turns out, the rumours were true. Chef Nicky Hull-Saldanha creates some wonders in that kitchen of his, plating dishes such as crispy oyster mushrooms, seafood medleys, wagyu burgers, seared scallops, and local ceviche like he’s been doing it since he was a babe in arms. Standards don’t drop on the cocktails, either. Wrap your lips around the Honey Paloma or Citrus Blossom and tell me I’m wrong.
Save room for dessert or live with regret.
This is one of those hidden gems that is ever-so-slightly off the beaten path, and once you discover it, you almost want to keep it a secret. There is limited seating, so if you start spreading the word, maybe next time when you want a table for yourself, you won’t be so lucky.
New menu items are being added on a regular basis, along with pop-up specials when Nicky finds the mood striking him.
I know I’m probably shooting myself in the foot by putting the word out, but this place is simply too good not to share.
Get all the details on the restaurant’s Facebook page. You’re welcome.
