Big Shave returns: Going bald is beautiful for a great cause

Familiar cheers, applause and sounds of celebration have been missing from The Wicket at Cricket Square for the last couple of Septembers.

Before then, hundreds would gather on a chosen date to support those having their heads shaved to raise money for St. Baldrick’s Foundation – a leader in childhood cancer research – through the annual Hannah’s Heroes Big Shave event.

COVID put the live fundraiser on hold for two years, and although an online version was well supported in 2020, there is no doubt that everyone is looking forward to being together in person for the social, emotional, joyous and uplifting ritual which has raised over US$2.7 million for St. Baldrick’s since its inception.

On 30 Sept. at The Wicket from 5-9pm, volunteers will once again step up to get their heads shaved, cheered on by sponsors and supporters, and all in the name of the young girl who started the movement in Cayman: Hannah Meeson. Hannah is a brain cancer survivor, after years of treatments with drugs developed for adults, not children. Her parents, Gaylene and Nigel Meeson, have been the driving force behind highlighting the importance of developing drugs specifically targeted towards paediatric cancers. Funding is needed for new trials and treatment options, and so the Big Shave was created to help fuel this crucial research.

Even if you are not stepping up to go under the razor, all are welcome to come along and help donate to the cause. There will be gold balloon raffle prizes, a silent auction featuring five-star luxury vacations, designer products, and more.

Food and drinks will be available from The Brasserie; PartyBooth will be on hand to snap memorable photos; and DJs will provide songs to shave to.
