The road closures that were implemented for the Pirates Week Festival weekend, running through Sunday, 20 Nov., have been causing significant delays on Cayman’s roads.
WhatsApp chats and social media sites lit up on Friday, with residents asking if there had been an accident on one of the major roads around George Town, or looking to others for advice on alternative routes to take in order to avoid the traffic snarls.
“Does anyone know what’s going on with the traffic in George Town? [It] is insane in South Church, Walkers etc.,” asked Janine Jacobs on Facebook, while Gemma Clarkson added, “It took me 1hr and 20 mins to get to work this morning down Walkers Rd.”
Shirley Roulstone expressed her frustration as a businesswoman inconvenienced by the closures, and wondered if the festival could be moved, due to the lack of space and parking in George Town.
“Could this and future similar Pirates Week and other events be held at the Truman Bodden Complex please where there is ample space and parking? Blocking George Town on a Saturday for the Pirates Week landing is a given. Inconveniencing hardworking people by blocking the main George Town roads on any weekday, and especially a Friday, is incredibly inconsiderate, thoughtless and unnecessary when there are proper venues to hold these things in every district.
“I am sure I am not the only angry bird who has to drive to earn a living,” Roulstone said.
The roads are scheduled to reopen at 10am on Sunday.
