The business of delivering smiles

Sabine delivers a meal to seniors.

As Vice President – AML Reporting and Compliance Client Services at Intertrust, Sabine Calvetti’s days are always busy.

In her role, she oversees Intertrust’s AML Reporting and Compliance Services offerings. These include the effectiveness of client entities’ Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Countering the Financing of Terrorism (CFT) systems; compliance by clients; applicable AML/CFT legislation and guidance; as well as the regular operation of the clients’ AML/ CFT policies and procedures.

But Sabine’s responsibilities do not end there. For, alongside her demanding job, she is also a board director at Meals on Wheels, assisting with the overall direction and leadership of the registered non-profit organisation which provides free, hot, nutritious meals to seniors in need across Grand Cayman.

“My specific areas of support include promoting and highlighting the work of the charity, and supporting our annual fundraising which raises much-needed funds to provide meals which are delivered free-of-cost to the seniors,” Sabine explains.

MEALS ON WHEELS

The work undertaken by Meals on Wheels is so desperately needed, and the charity works extremely hard, often in the background, to cook and deliver nutritious meals.

“We operate four community-based kitchens that cater to the dietary needs of our seniors, and who cook 335 meals each day. These meals are then delivered by a daily team of 30+ volunteers,” explains Sabine. “Without this hot meal and hearty soup, many seniors would not have access to nutritious food or even a visitor. We deliver so much more than just a meal, we deliver smiles!”

Sabine recognised the massive positive impact this charity has on the community, both nutritionally and socially, and felt it was important for her to contribute. Her work with them has shown her how something so seemingly simple makes such a huge impact on their lives.

“Meals on Wheels supplies many seniors with the assistance needed to retain their self-worth, independence and the assurance of a hot meal,” she says. “Senior hunger and isolation is a major issue for many seniors. Thanks to the social contact provided by our more than 100 volunteers, we offer some relief for our individuals during daily visits.

“Through teamwork and dedication, we deliver hot meals, warm smiles and peace of mind, while our volunteers develop lasting friendships with many of our clients.”

JUGGLING ACT

Fulfilling a demanding day job, as well as an important charitable role, is not always easy, and Sabine admits sometimes it can be difficult to juggle responsibilities.

“However, I am also fully aware of the importance of serving others who have been instrumental in forging the path for my generation and other generations to come,” she says. “It is only fair that we provide assistance to our seniors in their golden years as a show of appreciation and respect for their contributions to our society.”

Sabine is also fortunate in that Intertrust is fully supportive of her charity work and recognises the importance of community service.

Despite the challenges, Sabine encourages other women to get involved in community service, saying it is rewarding in a very unique way, allowing participants to help others feel valued.

“Whether through Meals on Wheels or any other local charity, it is essential to give back to those in our community who need some extra assistance in some way,” she says. “The key element to giving back is knowing that you are able to change someone’s life through giving of your time, your talents and your resources, all for the overall benefit of others.”
