For Athena Nicole, the real estate business is a welcoming one for women.
The founder of MOD Realty says the industry not only allows for flexibility, but has given her the opportunity to build her own business.
“I enjoy real estate because I get to meet a lot of people who end up being life-long friends,” she says. “I love being part of the construction process and decision-making, so I can make choices based on the needs of my clients and current trends.”
In the real estate business for nearly 10 years, Athena founded MOD Realty in 2019 as she felt there was a lack of diversity in the industry, particularly Caymanian representation. She also wanted to focus more on digital and social media marketing over traditional models.
A mother-of-two, Athena enjoys the camaraderie and supportive environment at MOD Realty, which has an all-female staff.
“We share so many relatable experiences and solutions amongst each other,” she says. “I believe in women supporting women.”
She finds there are some gender-related advantages when it come to the business, as she believes women can bring a certain level of trust to the industry for their clients.
“Being family-oriented, I can relate to an array of purchasers or sellers, whether it’s a first-timer, couple or family with children and pets.”
There are also some advantages to being a ‘homegrown’ agent.
“I know this island like the back of my hand,” says Athena. “I grew up in a traditional Caymanian community. I know the neighbourhoods. I’ve watched most of Cayman’s best-known properties built from the ground up.”
NATURAL TALENTS
Athena became involved in the real estate industry more by chance than design.
During an interview for an accounting position at a local brokerage, she was told mid-way through that, rather than focus on the financial side, she would be ideal for sales.
“It’s safe to say that real estate found me,” she says.
It’s a career that suits her personality and interests, as well as her ambitious and competitive nature.
“I have a natural sales spirit,” she says.
Although the demanding hours can be challenging, Athena tries to maintain a work-life balance.
“I feel it’s important… to remember you have a life outside job your title.”
Despite the challenges, she enjoys working in an industry that taps into her natural talents and energy.
“I’m naturally a giver, so I appreciate being a part of a career where I can help people and provide solutions.”
