A pair of local boxers recently entered the ring overseas, picking up wins at their respective competitions.
Cayman’s James Green, who attends and fights for the Cambridge University Amateur Boxing Club, punched his way to his first amateur victory in February during his school’s Town v Gown event.
Green, now 1-1, had a dominant showing against Hardeep Atwal that earned him a unanimous decision win. Speaking with the Cayman Compass about the match, he said, “[Out] of the 15 fighters from our club, I was the first one to win that night and the first male to win from the club all year,” he said.
“We fight in a very competitive region. [I] only [have] two fights but they have been matched very aggressively.”
He added that he would have liked to fight this month but his efforts during the fight took a toll.
“I injured both of my hands in the last fight.”
Jaden Eccleston, who has trained with Green in Cayman, also had his fair share of trading leather between the ropes last month.
Eccleston competed twice at the Copa Independencia in Santiago, Dominican Republic. Eccleston first competed against Cristian Javier Pinales of the Dominican Republic, where he suffered his first defeat, with his opponent going on to win the entire tournament.
“The first guy was a good boxer. I just couldn’t land on him clean,” he said, adding he wasn’t bothered by the result “because [Pinales] is the best boxer in the Dominican and…I lost by a narrow decision,” Eccleston told the Compass.
His second opponent did not fare as well. Instead, Eccleston, a two-time Caribbean Championship gold medallist, put on a clinic against Ricardo Peña to improve his record to 6-1.
“I feel good about my performance,” Eccleston said. “I went into that fight more confident. I just stuck to my game plan that coach [Floyd Trumpet] worked on.”
