Two Honda Fit cars caught fire early this morning, Sunday, 7 May, not long after Batabano carnival festivities came to a close in George Town.

Police and firefighters were called to a fire in a silver Honda Fit on Rock Hole Road near Mary Street at 1.05am, the Department of Public Safety Communications told the Compass.

They were called out again at 1.41am when a white Honda Fit was engulfed in flames in front of the Waterfront Centre on North Church Street.

The Royal Cayman Islands Police Service confirmed that officers responded to two separate reports of vehicles on fire in George Town in close proximity to each other.

“Police are working with the Cayman Islands Fire Service to investigate cause of fires,” a police spokesperson told the Compass, adding the circumstances are “suspicious”.

The fire service said they are unable to provide any further details because the matters are under investigation.

Hundreds of people attended the Batabano Las’ Lap Street Dance which was held nearby on Harbour Drive near Cardinal Avenue, and closed at midnight.
