The Cayman Brac Heritage House was abuzz with activity over the coronation holiday weekend as it hosted the National Children’s Festival of the Arts exhibition featuring artwork from local students.
It was an exciting moment for West End Primary School student Savannah Scott Tibbetts, 9, who said she was happy to see her art in display.

“It is nice,” she said, as she showed the Cayman Compass her artwork.
Tammy Hopkins, Sister Islands senior school improvement officer, said in an emailed response to the Compass that the exhibition was curated to showcase the creative art work of all the students on Cayman Brac.
“We decided as part of the 2023 National Children’s Festival of the Arts to provide an opportunity for our students to display their artistic abilities through various mediums. There were entries received from approximately 67 students across the three schools,” she said.
The display included 70 pieces under various themes of Earth Month, the King’s coronation, anime and personal creative expression.
The Heritage House newsletter stated that a soft opening ceremony was held on
Friday, 28 April, for the exhibit, which is a project in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Department of Education Services.
Natalya Bodden, West End Primary School secretary, welcomed the initiative saying that it was a wonderful outlet for students.
“We definitely should [do more events like this.] It gives them another avenue than just academics and sports, because you do have the artistic kids who don’t necessarily get to showcase this enough,” she said.

Bodden, who brought her niece and nephew to the exhibit to see their artwork on display, said it was special to see the talent displayed.
Hopkins said the Sister Islands community is very supportive when it comes to its younger residents.
“We want to thank the Cayman Brac Heritage House for hosting the exhibit and allowing residents and visitors alike to view the talent of our young artists,” she said. “The National Children’s Festival of the Arts is an annual event and we are pleased to hold this art exhibit for the first time in many years.
“We were delighted to have Mr. Mark Ray, Director of the Department of Education Services, Mrs. Chelsea Whittaker, Deputy District Commissioner as well as some of our local Artist Partners in attendance for the opening of the exhibition,” she added.
