A team of Cayman Islands karate athletes kicked their way to securing four medals during the 6th annual Caribbean Karate Championship.
The regional event, held at the end of July, drew around 120 athletes representing more than a dozen countries.
Cayman was represented by a team of five athletes, including three teenagers and two adults. The team won three silver medals and one bronze medal in Kumite (fighting) and Kata (forms).
In a statement to the Cayman Compass, Carson Ebanks, the secretary general of the Cayman Islands Olympic Committee and president of the Cayman Islands National Karate-Do Association (CINKA), said he was thrilled to see Cayman deliver a top-tier performance.
“The CINKA team continues to improve at a rapid pace, thanks to their hard work and the dedicated support from individuals such as Shihan Greg Reid, coach Patrick Brendel, fitness coach Virginia Muspratt and others,” Ebanks stated.

The last time Cayman participated in the Caribbean Karate Championship; they brought home a single bronze medal.
“On behalf of [CINKA], please allow me to congratulate our Karatekas for their historic performance,” Ebanks added. “This is the first time the Cayman Islands has won multiple medals competing in karate at the Caribbean regional level.”
