Cayman poets reunite for ‘Floetry’ return

After a three-year hiatus, Floetry reunited local poets as they shared their love of the art form through readings at Harquail Studio Theatre on 5 Oct.

“Floetry was established in 2009 to engage more with the community of poets,” said Hylton Grace, event emcee and original Floetry member. Floetry also included a Spanish Floetry version, and literary festivals.

He said Floetry eventually declined due to the COVID-19 pandemic, although they maintained connection through an online forum and a WhatsApp group. The group moved from venue to venue throughout the years, and now has a home at the Harquail Studio Theatre, a partnership which has been established with the Cayman National Cultural Foundation, Grace added.

“Floetry will again be a once-a-month occasion where we will gather, share some poetry and have fun. I know there are lots of poets here who have been waiting, waiting for this.” Grace said.

The event will most likely be scheduled for the last Thursday of the month, he added.

The evening, in its usual format, featured new and old Floetry performers. Those who wished to perform wrote their names down and, one by one, performed their original pieces of poetry. Featured artist Kevin Creary also recited his works.

Performers at Floetry included Hylton Grace, Michelle Reid, Tianna Martinez-Barrio, Damani Gow, Ryan Zhu, Kirk Patrick Townsend, Miriam Schwabe, Chad Hintzen and Chasya Dove.
