On the heels of hosting the biggest North American Powerlifting Championship in August, the Cayman Islands Powerlifting Organization is gearing up for its third annual Strongman competition set for Monday, 13 Nov.
“Our annual [event] will have some of our own powerlifters competing and [we] would encourage all gym enthusiast to come out to participate, and support,” competition organiser Tony McInerney told the Compass. “You will never know how strong you really are until you put it to the test. You may be competing against others but the real competition is against yourself.”
The event, to be held at the Lions Centre, will no doubt feature many of Cayman’s top strongmen competing across various strength courses, which include the Conan walk, carry-and-load medley, deadlift showdown, Atlas stones and truck pull.
McInerney said the event will also have women showcasing their strength, noting that a new line-up of competitors will join athletes who participated last year.
“This event is a lot of fun,” McInerney said, noting that people of all sizes and genders will not only show off their physical strength but also push their mental strength to the limits.

In the past, the competition has welcomed celebrity strongmen, including Eddie Hall in 2019. This year, one of the world’s top strongmen, Travis Ortmayer from Cypress, Texas, will be in attendance as a judge.
Ortmayer will also be speaking to local schools about his journey from being bullied as an overweight kid to becoming a strongman where he also had to overcome mental health challenges.
The Cayman powerlifting event will run from 1pm to 5pm.
