Performers took audience members on a starry adventure into space during Friday’s debut of ‘Across the Universe’, an original show by Quinntessential Movement Studio.
The showcase at the Harquail Theatre incorporated aerial silks, lyra aerial hoops, floor dances, poles and more.
The story follows astronaut Freestyler, played by Angela Alfonso, who travels to various planets in search of dance inspiration. From the flowing, delicate choreography of the water world to the intense, gravity-defying choreography of the metal world, each new galactic expedition showed something new to the space explorer.
Cast members included instructors from the studio and their students, including some who joined the showcase for the first time.
Em Whitney said they have previously done productions, including ‘The Wizard of Oz’ and ‘Alice in Wonderland,’ but this is the first year they put together an original show.
“It’s amazing to watch it all come together,” she said after the show. “You have so many weeks where you question if it is all going to work, but then opening night comes and everyone is in awe. It’s magic.”
The creative team included Whitney, studio owner Quinn McCrimmon, and Tracey Burns, who came up with the overarching storyline. The choreography was a collaborative effort led by Renee Ravazzani, Hayley Loarridge, Michelle Augenstein Randolph and Meg Akabas.
Whitney said the team wanted to dazzle audiences by breaking up the various arts into specific sets, giving the performers more space to show what is unique about each type of dance.
“We’re very happy,” she said, reflecting on the first show. “It’s nice to see so much local support.”
The final performance for adults took place at 7pm Saturday at the Harquail Theatre. A show for audience members of all ages takes place 2pm Sunday. Tickets are available at the door or online at eventpro.ky.
Community members can keep up with future shows on the studio’s Facebook page.
