Governor Owen tests the waters with eFoil board

Ahead of the long holiday weekend, Governor Jane Owen showed off her athletic abilities with her first eFoil lesson.

Owen shared on her Instagram page of more than 10,000 followers on Friday a video of her gliding on the waters of palest emerald merging to darkest blue with the battery-powered electronic surfboard. The new water sport combines elements of surfing, floating, hoverboarding and flying.

“Inspired by the graceful eFoils on Seven Mile beach, I took my first lesson!” Owen wrote, adding, “Quite hard to remain standing!”

Tagged in the post was Cayman eFoil, a local eFoil service run by Riley Grey. Governor Owen thanked Grey for “being a great teacher.”

Governor Owen told the Compass, “Cayman has great water sports for everyone to enjoy. I was inspired to try eFoil as I see them glide along Seven Mile Beach with impressive grace every day. It was a wonderful experience and I hope [it] encourages others to try new skills too.”

Grey told the Compass he had a fantastic experience teaching Governor Owen.

“Just like teaching any enthusiastic newcomer to the sport,” Grey said. “Governor Owen was genuinely interested and eager to learn, which made the lesson enjoyable and fulfilling.”

Grey said the 15-to-20-minute lesson included all of the fundamentals on how the eFoil works, essential safety rules, operating the Bluetooth remote, standing up on the board, and the proper way to fall off safely.

“Then, we headed into the water, using waterproof communication headsets, and I guided her through the process step-by-step,” Grey said. “She did amazing! She listened carefully, followed the instructions precisely, and achieved ‘touch-n-go’s’ during her first session, which means she successfully lifted the board off the water with control and then smoothly brought it back down.”

Grey said he enjoyed seeing the pure joy and excitement on her face, a common reaction for first-time riders.
