The recent weather will not have an impact on the 32nd annual Flowers Sea Swim this Saturday, which will welcome hundreds of swimmers for the famous one-mile race in the water along Seven Mile Beach.
Anup Itwar, head organiser for the swim, told the Compass on Wednesday, 12 June, that they are “expecting mild weather on the day” which shouldn’t affect the competition.
According to Itwar, close to 700 participants have registered, including several elite athletes and Olympians. Among them will be Roland Schoeman, Alex Meyer, Maritza Correia, Fraser brothers Shaune and Brett Fraser, Andrew Mackay, Kerri Kanuga and Geoffrey Butler.
But those aren’t the only swimmers who are being highlighted for this event.
Public primary school students from the Swim Free programme – launched almost a year ago by the Flowers family – will swim the last metres of the mile.
“A group of kids will have a 25-metre dash at the end of the race,” Itwar said. “There will be safely measures, of course, with some coaches.
“This will make them feel accomplished because they have worked hard over the last year.”
All registration proceeds will benefit the Swim Free programme, through which a mobile pool is transported to various government schools in an effort to build on the already 1,000 kids learning to swim through the initiative.
The race will start from Coral Beach at 2pm, ending at the Villas of the Galleon. The Port Authority has advised all non-emergency vessels to stay about 500m from shore along the race route between 2pm and 4:30pm.
