Venezuela election protest gathers dozens in George Town

Dozens gathered in Heroes Square on Saturday as part of worldwide protests against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his highly contested claim to victory in the country’s 28 July election.

George Town was one of 373 cities that joined protests around the world, according to the count from Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, who marched with protesters in Caracas.

Machado called the day a historic step in confronting the fraud that occurred in the election and called Maduro a tyrant who had now been “laid bare”.

“This is the time to take action. Taking action means that every vote is respected,” she shouted to the crowd in Caracas.

Machado says that through the efforts of one million volunteers, the Venezuelan opposition has been able to collect and digitise enough voting records to prove that opposition candidate Edmundo González was the rightful winner of the elections.

In Cayman, demonstrators held up signs calling for freedom in Venezuela and rejecting electoral fraud.

They waved a large Venezuelan flag in solidarity with the country’s diaspora of 7.7 million people.

Machado called the protests a stand against fear and repression, as thousands face arrest and harassment in Venezuela for their opposition to the Maduro government.
